Report finds Worcester County’s OPEB liability decreased by nearly $45 million in FY24

Snow Hill, Maryland – Worcester County is making giant strides toward fully funding Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) Trusts for County and Board of Education (BOE) retirees. That’s according to a valuation by Menard Consulting, Inc., which confirms that in fiscal year (FY) 2024 Worcester County’s OPEB liability for the BOE decreased by $44.8 million. This brings the County much closer to the goal of eliminating the need for General Fund revenues to pay the cost of healthcare benefits for retirees.

Worcester County Government 2024 Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices, including the Worcester County Recreation Center and all five branch libraries, will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29, 2024, for Thanksgiving Day and American Indian Heritage Day. In addition, the libraries will be closed Saturday, Nov. 30.

The Central Landfill in Newark and the Berlin, Pocomoke, and Snow Hill Homeowner Convenience Centers (HOCC) will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28. Standard hours of operation at these facilities will resume Friday, Nov. 29.

Worcester County Cancels Ban on Outdoor Burning Beginning November 21

Snow Hill, Maryland (November 21, 2024): Effective immediately, the outdoor burning ban in Worcester County is being lifted.

“Due to recent precipitation countywide, the drought conditions have improved, and the burn ban has been lifted,” Fire Marshal Matt Owens said.  

All who conduct outdoor burnings, regardless of the type, are reminded that the law requires any fire to be attended from start to extinguishment. Precautions for having the proper tools and safe water supply are also required.

Head to the drive-in this December for free movies across Maryland’s Coast

Worcester County Recreation & Parks (WCRP) will be hosting four, free Christmas movie nights in Ocean Pines, Berlin, Snow Hill, and Pocomoke this December. Movies will play on a giant, outdoor screen. All are invited, so gather your family and friends for a month of movies under the stars.

Nightmare Before Christmas will take place December 6 at Newtown Park in Pocomoke and December 13 at the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex in Berlin.

Dry, windy conditions have increased fire risk across the state and fueled ongoing wildfires

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is implementing a statewide ban on open air burning, effective today, November 1, in all Maryland counties.

Worcester County Offices Closed November 5th & 11th for Federal Holidays

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices, including Recreation and Parks, will be closed for two upcoming federal holidays: Election Day on Tuesday, November 5; and Veterans Day on Monday, November 11.

All five Branch Libraries, Central Landfill, and Homeowner Convenience Centers will be open during standard hours of operation on both dates.

Commissioners to Cut Ribbon on New Northern Worcester Athletic Complex Scoreboard and Playground Systems November 6

Snow Hill, Maryland – Area residents are cordially invited to join the Worcester County Commissioners as they cut the ribbon on the new scoreboard and playground at the Northern Worcester Athletic Complex, located off U.S. Rt. 113 in Berlin, on November 6, 2024 at 1:30 p.m.

Worcester County Recreation and Parks professionals contracted with Daktronics to install the scoreboard measuring 8’ H x 18’ W and positioned 10’ above the ground. The scoreboard will be utilized by Pop Warner Football and other leagues and tournaments that use the field.
